Are Golf Carts Street Legal in Florida?
Florida is one of the most cart-friendly states, but “street legal” is decided as much by your county and city as by state law — and the fine print changes between neighborhoods.
What is usually required
- Working headlights, tail lights and brake lights
- Turn signals and a rear-view mirror
- A horn, windshield and seat belts
- Registration and insurance where the road is designated for low-speed vehicles
Two different things
Golf carts and low-speed vehicles are not the same category. Low-speed vehicles are permitted on roads with higher speed limits and carry more equipment requirements; carts are typically confined to streets posted at low speed and to certain zones.
Check locally before you buy
Ask your city or county clerk for the local ordinance, then confirm what your insurance will cover. Requirements vary by municipality, so verify current rules with your local authority before making decisions.
