How Many Batteries Are in an Electric Golf Cart?

Carts do not use one big battery — they use a series pack, wired so the voltages add up to the system total the controller expects.

Typical configurations

  • Six 8-volt batteries: a common setup on four-seat carts
  • Four 12-volt batteries: fewer units, similar total
  • Eight 6-volt batteries: older configuration, still common on used carts
  • Lithium: one or two packs replacing the whole set

Why it matters

A pack is only as strong as its weakest unit. One weak battery drags down range, forces the charger to run longer and eventually ruins its neighbours — which is why packs get tested as a set.

Replacing

Replace the full pack rather than one unit, and match capacity across all positions. Mixed ages produce exactly the failure pattern you were trying to avoid.
