Routine Maintenance for Your Golf Cart Battery
Batteries fail from neglect rather than age most of the time. A short monthly routine prevents the majority of pack failures we see come through the workshop.
Monthly routine
- Check the water level in every cell and top up with distilled water only
- Clean terminals and coat them with a thin layer of dielectric grease
- Confirm the charger reaches a full-charge state every time
- Look for swelling, cracking or leaking cases
Every few months
Do a capacity check: note how far the cart goes on a full charge compared with when the pack was new. A steady decline is the early warning that a cell is failing.
What to avoid
Never add tap water — the minerals coat the plates. Never mix old and new batteries in one pack. And never store the cart with a half-charged pack, which is the fastest route to sulphation.
